THESSALONIKI
It is a town founded by Kasandr - the king of ancient Macedonia. Its name comes from the name of his wife, Alexander the Great’s sister. The history of this place has over 2300 years but the city in large part is a young town when it comes about society as well as architecture. The reason for this is a huge fire which took place in 1917. Then most of building was destroyed.
Nowaday’s, Thessaloniki are inhabited with over 500 thousand people and city is the most important in the north of Greece. It is situated along the costline of Aegean Sea at the foot of the mountain Chortiatis (3940,29 feet)/
You can find here many monuments, some interesting museums but the lovers of entertainment won’t be bored here also.
TOURIST ATTRACTION
The most valuable and the oldest monument from all the bizantic buildings here is a church Hagias Sophia from VIII century. But the most known is Saint Demetrius church which was reconstructed after the fire in 1917. Saint Demetrius was a martyr who died on 26th of October 306. This day is the official holiday of Thessaloniki.
Other interesting monument is Roman triumphal arch of Galerius emperor or the symbol of the city which is Venetian White Tower. Amazingly beautiful place is so-called Thessaloniki Acropolis – the fortress with monasteries and churches and beautiful housing district.
There are many museums in city from which the most interesting are: Archeological Museum which presents the Roman and Hellenistic art, there are also findings from king Philip II of Macedon’s tomb and the Vergina’s treasures. The Museum of Struggle for Macedonia in which are photos, posters and brochures which should emphasize Greek right to Macedonia. Ethnographic Macedonian Museum, in which are exhibits connected with everyday life.
ENTERTAINMENT
Latem życie nocne toczy się w klubach, barach, tawernach, które położone są wzdłuż wybrzeża. Znana jest wszystkim dzielnica Ladhdika, w której znajdują się czynne przez cały rok dyskoteki i nocne lokale.
Many festivals and other events that Thessaloniki are famous about will for sure interest you. The festival of Greek Song takes place at the turn of September and October. On the occasion of Oxi “Ochi” day on 28th of October huge parades, artistic performances and dances are organized. It a national holiday which in order to commemorate alleged response of general Metakss to ultimatum of Mussolini in 1940 which was: Ochi – what means no. On 26th of October Saint Demetrius holiday is being celebrated. He is a patron of city. On this day the new wine is being tasted for the first time. Also Movie Festival takes place in October. Many interesting performaces are played in the Culture Centre Milos and in Forest Theatre and in Theatre in Garden. In the culture centre takes place also concerts, exhibitions. There are also some pubs and jazz café. In summer night life goes on in clubs, pubs and taverns which are situated along the coastline. District Ladhdika is known to everyone because there are disco and night pubs which are open for the whole year.
